What is the prostate? The prostate is a walnut-sized gland in the male reproductive system. It sits just under the bladder, which stores the urine. Passing through the prostate is the urethra, the tube that carries urine out through the penis. During ejaculation, the prostate squeezes fluid into the urethra to help sperm move more quickly and easily.2 Male Anatomy16,17Two periods of growthThe prostate grows to almost double its size during puberty.
